Snowbound Memories

There were two things that annoyed John. Being called Sparky was one of them. The only thing that overshadowed that was the cold snow of Boston during winter. The freezing temperatures that chilled him no matter how much clothing he wore, the small snowflakes sliding down his neck and melting into sharp pricks of discomfort along his copper skin and the blistering winds that could knock anyone flat on their asses if they didn't have the proper footing.

So far tonight, he just had to contend ...

-Sable-

I got the book when some great aunt on my mother’s side died, she left it to me. She said that I was the only one in the family with any imagination left, which was strange because the only time we had seen each other I was five and every five year old is imaginative to some degree. Whatever her reasoning was the book was mine now. From the outside it looked like a plain old writing journal with a boring brownish color to it but the inside was a beautifully decorated story. ...

The blows fell hard and qick, her claws tearing up the skin of the little girl's arm and side.

"You are not here to ask questions!" was the sreech.

Animals and birds, agitated in their hung cages, added to the din with howls and caws. The Hag ignored them for now. The barbed fists reigned down on the little girl's back as she tried to curl in a corner.

"You are here to learn!" yelled the little girl's teacher. Having exposed muscle she started tearing the deeper flesh. ...

Part I:

Once upon a time, in the faraway land of Arcadia, there ruled a ruthless King from atop the largest Volcano, mount Kaji. He was known by many names, such as The burning King, The Lord of Fire, or The Phoenix of the Deep, and his kingdom stretched entire mountain ranges.

Tall as the mountains he inhabited, and powerful as the magma harbored by his volcano, he thought himself indestructible, until one day he met her. Only few Arcadian Lords even knew of her existence, and even fewer ...

A short city block, completely dark except for the convenience store's florescent lights spilling out through the plate glass windows in a square on the street.

The store was the only place in the City with lights. The only place that seemed normal. The only place that didn't seem like a maze of streets, fire escapes and abandoned buildings; Sin City as drawn by M. C. Escher. It was also the only place in the City were you could get food.

The most dangerous place in the city.

At the time, Derek Noble couldn’t recall ever having been happier. In his fifth year as an instructor at the Wagner Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts, his turn had finally come around to direct the year’s Shakespeare production. He hadn’t gotten to do A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as the school had done that only three years past, but his second choice – Romeo and Juliet – had been approved. He’d worked his ass off all through the summer break, making quite an annoyance ...

The tune that rolled out of his lavish room was tinged with both sadness and joy, a harmony of contrasting characters that had become Pryderi’s life since being taken by his Keeper.

Drip, drip

Pryderi played the same note over and over, making sure the line between hope and loathing was on a knife’s edge.

Drip, drip went the fresh blood

The Muse thought of what his Keeper wished for; a song of pleasure and pain, of suffering and ecstasy, of all things divergent and conflicting. ...

It was the little things, Brandon thought. Minor differences between this reality, and what little he could remember of his time before, that really drove home the fact that he was somewhere new and scary.

For example, he could remember that in the before-time, the fights were measured in rounds; and between rounds you could sit in your corner, and have some water, and have the sweat toweled from your face.

Here, though, the fight just went on, until you were dropped, until you were stomped ...

"I'm Kyle Franesco," said Kyle Franesco. "Who are you?"

"I am Dragon." said Dragon. "And I shall devour you in one slow mouthful, little man in a hat."

Kile blinked. What would HE do? Kyle had absolutely no idea. Come on. After all, I'm a part of HIM now, right? I can do whatever HE can do, right? "Eh. ...

Grobbler kicks in the screen door, scared and excited. His body is shaking feverishly at the prospect of what he came here to do.

The living room is cheaply furnished, a small TV, a meagre bookshelf, a comically size Jesus-cross on the wall. In the center of the room, a drab colored Lazy boy chair sinks into the thick shag carpet, and nestled in the seat is the man who wears Grobbler's real face.

There's no surprise, no fear in the mockery's eyes. He just turns his head and gives his ...
