There was a displacement of air as Armstrong returned, clutching the keys to Ruby's van. Then then sound of rapid footsteps, followed shortly by that of a shower going full blast, hot and steamy.

Nobody heard her crying.

People saw her, but nobody noticed. The elderly greeter's gaze slipped off her like water off a duck's back. It wasn't even a challenge for her to slip a couple of packages of eye patches into the large pockets of her overcoat. Nobody noticed her leaving either.

Once she put one of them on, she could finally look at herself in a mirror again. Now she could deal with real people again.
