Reporting to Work

It wasn’t exactly what he had been looking for, but there was no background check and Henderson wasn’t afraid to pay under the table. In fact, Joshua wasn’t sure Henderson even had a table.
He pulled the cap low, to keep the sun from his eyes, and started up the lawnmower. It was not quite 6:30 in the morning, and there were very few cars passing this retail block to see him mowing the grass at a strip mall. This was what he was going to do for the foreseeable future: six hours a day, six days a week, landscaping and cleaning so shopping areas would look clean and pristine for the public that would come later. Four bucks an hour, cash, every two weeks; which didn’t amount to much, but it was amazing how much money you could save when you were capable of turning water into gasoline, laundry detergent, and orange juice.
Most of the crew were Hispanic. They didn’t talk to him much. There wasn’t much talking to be done, really; the mowers and trimmers were all too loud, and that was fine with Joshua. Henderson didn’t talk to Joshua much either, which was also just dandy. Henderson thought Joshua was a Russian immigrant named Yuri. The fake accent he had used wasn’t great but it was passable, and he knew more than enough Russian to curse convincingly if need be.
He never saw Henderson anyway; that guy coordinated things from his office, or sometimes from his truck, driving out to the sites he managed. It had been three days so far and Joshua was pretty sure he wasn’t going to see that guy again until the cash was due.
It was good, hard work; you got to be out in the air and the sun (once it came up), and you could see a difference once you were done. It beat working in an office, he reckoned.
