Context

A flintlock mechanism is rather simple. The cock strikes the frizzen, simultaneously exposing the pan, and dropping a spark into said pan, igniting the powder it contains. This, in turn, ignites the powder in the barrel. Sometimes, the barrel's charge does not ignite, simply causing a flash in the pan.

This was exactly the image Asa had in his mind as he listened.

Asa owned a flintlock.

He listened to the words spoken, and watched as the flame sputtered and died in the pan of a woman's Requiem.

Does she even realize what I did?

Jane Scotts had not been brought to elaborate upon her viewings. She had been brought to be given the opportunity to make a mistake in front of the city's elite.

Which she had.

The pretense of any political aspirations, in the City, or the Invictus, dissipated like smoke from spent powder.

I hope you enjoyed our 'game', but it's over now.

"Ms. Scotts," Asa said, calmly, "Thank you for making yourself available. If you could wait in the parlor now, someone will be sent for you if we have any more questions about your viewings."
